Week of October 5

Welcome to Chimney Lakes Elementary School!
Our Resources for the week are: Monday #1-18 P.E. & #19-36 GUIDANCE, Tuesday MUSIC, Thursday #1-18 P.E. & #19-36 MEDIA, and Friday ART. Tuesday is WALK TO SCHOOL DAY!! Hope to see lots of you participate. Wednesday is an Early Release Day and Friday is School Color Day!! Emily will be bringing Fun Friday Snacks.

Handwriting/Writing
The letter formations we are working on are: Nn, Kk, Qq and Vv.
We will be focusing on using our letter sounds again this week and SLOWLY writing. Make sure when doing the writing homework your child is beginning to write and using their sounds. DO NOT tell them how to write. We want them to gain confidence and independence. :) They may only write the beginning sound for each word or they may write more. Also, please make sure their characters are detailed!! We have worked a lot on detailed people: facial details, necks, muscle arms and legs, etc.
EXAMPLE: I like to wk to s.
*We have learned the sight words I, like and to. So those may be spelled correctly. However, your child will use their sounds to write the unknown words walk "wk" and school "s."

Math
Number 10 is the number of the week! Working with ten in different configurations, adding to ten and stories about ten are the focus. We love 10!! Practice counting to 100 and beyond! Here is our Superhero counting song to practice with at home!

 Science
Our little scientists investigated the sense of smell last week. We finished today by completing a journal page of things we like and don't like to smell! Some things the class brainstormed were dirty socks, pizza, flowers, perfume and skunks! How do we use our eyes? Our class will explore that question this week!

Reading
Sight words for the week are: one, two, five & it.
We will be listening to stories and discussing how they are fiction stories made up by someones imagination. Some of the stories may be new to the students, but others they may already know.  We will be retelling the stories using pictures to guide our words and when appropriate saying the name of the character instead of just the animal name. The stories we will be enjoying are: Chicken Little, The Three Little Pigs,The Three Billy Goats Gruff, The Wolf and the Seven Little Kids and The Bremen Town Musicians.
Click on the titles so that you can reread the stories to your child and have them practice retelling the stories to you. :) Enjoy!

Egypt

Our school is an International Magnet School. Each grade level learns about a Continent and a particular country. Kindergarten has Africa and we chose to learn about Egypt. :)

This month we focused on finding the country on our large World carpet and then looking at it's flag. All the students were able to color an Egyptian flag and then we chose one to hang up on the Bulletin Board near the front office.
