Jackets and Hoodies

Vector Clip Art of Vector of teen boy wearing hooded jacket - Vector ...

Please make sure to write your Child's name inside of their jackets and hoodies. We have been finding a lot left on the floor in our classroom and the hallway. The students are not claiming them as their own and we are having to put them in the Lost and Found area.

Thanks for your support!

Week of October 19

Fall Clipart | Clipart Panda - Free Clipart Images
Our Resources for the week are: Monday #1-18 ART & #19-36 MUSIC, Tuesday ART, and Thursday MUSIC. Wednesday is an Early Release Day and Friday is Fall T-shirt Day. Juelz will be bringing in Fun Friday Snacks. :)

Handwriting/Writing
We will be reviewing letter formations for Uppercase and Lowercase. If you notice you child is having difficulty with any of the letters ~writing them backwards, not completing the circle of the letter~ please have your child practice writing them correctly.  We will begin word families next week and I want the students to be prepared with their b's and d's, n's and h's and also their s's and z's. :)
At home, make sure your child is drawing detailed people with a complete setting. Also, please remind them that we draw with pencil at school, so that if they make a mistake they can fix it and not become frustrated. We have noticed a great improvement with detailed people!! Hope the great work continues. :)
Here are a few detailed people drawn by the students for you to enjoy!

Math
The students are progressing well with the concept of one more and are catching on quickly to one less. Our work with "one less" continues this week. The foundations of subtraction are being set as we explore "taking away" from a set.  As the end of the week approaches the students will have a little Jack-o-lantern fun using their math skills. Also, the Fall theme will be incorporated into many of our math centers. Be working on counting onto 50 now. The problem areas seem to be 39,40 then again 49,50. If your child already counts to 100 practice counting passed 100!

 Science
Our little scientists begin the week asking questions like a scientist about the world around them. As the week progresses we use questions to help us investigate the world. We will complete a Water Absorption investigation and explore weighing and comparing objects using a balance. Here is a fun episode on science tools from Sid the Science Kid I'm sure YOUR science kid will enjoy!

Reading
Sight words for the week are: get, up, my and so.
We will be reading one more folktale and then begin reviewing the standards for our Test. The standards we have been working on through this Module are: Identifying characters, setting and major events in a story. Retelling stories with key details and using Character names when appropriate. Identify beginning, middle and ending events in proper sequence.  Asking and answering questions about the stories.  The folktale we will be reading this week is Tug-of-War. (Click the title so that you can enjoy the story with your child.) We will play a fun game where two people will look at a picture and describe what is going on in the picture so that the rest of the class can guess the title of the story. The students are not allowed to see the picture until after they guess the story title correctly. :)
We will end Stories by making a fun Chicken picture to practice our retelling of Chicken Little. (You can find the story on the blog post done a few weeks ago.) Be prepared for a lot of "The sky is falling!" talk. haha The students really enjoyed saying the line!.

Here are a few photos we will use in our game. Try it out with your child at home!
(I apologize for the first two photos being on their side, blogger would not allow me to rotate them... very strange!)

Stuffed Animal Day

The students were adorable playing with their stuffed animals during recess. Everyone allowed their friends to play with their special "friends." Enjoy watching the cute slideshow!

If your child is missing from the slideshow, we apologize but they didn't come over when we called for pictures.

Character Dress Up Day!

The Superintendent's All Star Literacy Week was a huge success at Chimney Lakes!!
We ended the week with a Character Parade and there were a ton of students that participated. :) We had every character, from any book that you could possibly think of! Everyone was very creative.
Also, we went to the Book Swap on Friday and everyone received a new book!

Unfortunately we did not get video of the parade because we chose to walk in it with the students that wore Character Attire. If by chance I can get a hold of a video, I will add it to this post! :)

Enjoy watching the slideshow!!

Week of October 12

Here is the door decoration we made for the Superintendent's All Star Literacy Week.

Our Resources for the week are: Monday #1-18 MUSIC & #19-36 P.E., Tuesday #1-18 in the classroom & #19-36 P.E, Wednesday MUSIC, and Friday #1-18 MEDIA & #19-36 P.E. This week is Superintendent's All Star Literacy Week, make sure to check out the blog post with the information so that you don't miss out on any of the fun activities. Friday is Stuffed Animal Day!! (Please send the stuffed animal to school in your child's backpack. We will take them outside during Recess time.) Friday is also Character Dress Up Day!! **We will have a short Parade (approx.15 minutes) at 9:00a.m. Only students dressed in their character attire and have their book will be allowed to walk in the Parade. Other students will watch. Also, please send a set of clothes for your child to change into so that they can change out of their character attire if they choose to. Scholastic Book Orders are also due Friday! You may send your order online or send the order form with money to school. Orlando will be bringing in Fun Friday Snacks.

Handwriting/Writing
The letter formations we are working on are: Xx, Yy, and Zz. We will be working on completing a writing piece in class and sharing it with our peers. The students will be expected to tell about their story and explain why it is the best work they have done thus far.
At home, make sure your child is drawing detailed people with a complete setting. When they add color remind them that they need to take their time so that scribbling doesn't happen. Finally when they go to write; remind them they know a lot of sight words and they can use them in their writing! Not to mention they know letter sounds and can sound out their words. :)

Math
One more, One Less. Students use their understanding of relationships between numbers to recognize that each successive number name refers to a quantity that is one greater and that the number before is one less. This important insight leads students to use the Level 2 strategy of counting on rather than counting all, later in the year and on into Grade 1.

Reading
Sight words for the week are: go, day, on and said. Continue practicing reading Sight Words with the Sight Word Money at home. If you need additional copies of the words, you can find links to print them out by looking on the left side column of the blog.
We will be reading folktales and continuing to retell them, however we will work on retelling the story by using the character's names and setting when appropriate. Also, we will discuss the plot of each story~ what is the story mostly about, what is its plot? The folktales we will be reading are Momotaro, Peach Boy , The Story of Jumping Mouse Part 1 and Part 2 ,  and Goldilocks and the Three Bears.
I typed up each of the stories again.:) You can access them by clicking on the title of the folktale. After you read it to your child, ask them about the plot and then have them retell the story to you. Make sure their events start at the beginning, then move on through the middle and go to the end.

Sense of Sight

Image result for science images for kids
During Science we got a chance to go outside with hand lenses and colored lenses and use our sense of sight. We were able to see lots of great things, including the gardens that a few of the 3rd grade classes have recently planted.
When we went back to class, the students were asked to draw and write about what they saw. Enjoy watching the slideshow and seeing the excitement on their faces! :)

Visit from the Firefighters

Image result for fire safety month
This month is Fire Safety Month and we celebrated it by having a visit from Fire Station 52.
(We found out about this awesome visit just a few days ago and we couldn't say no! The class was very excited!!)

The firefighters came and discussed what their jobs are at the fire station and in the truck. They showed the students all the tools that are packed neatly away and hidden in compartments on the truck. Then they allowed each student to go inside, this was their favorite part!! They looked all over before being helped out of the truck. :)  Then ended their visit by taking a class photo with us and answering any questions the students had.

If you want to go further with information about your family's fire safety. Here's a link to a work book that you might want to check out. :)

Enjoy watching the slideshow!!
