We had many late t-shirts turned in today. The deadline was Tuesday. Each morning we asked the students if they had a t-shirt in their backpack and to check for them. Unfortunately we are unable to help your child make their t-shirt. The symbols are on the blog if you would like your child to make the t-shirt with your child.

We are continuing our Memory Books. :)

MATH
This week we are working on decomposing and composing teen numbers and representing the numbers with equations. For example: 14 is 1 group of tens and 4 extra ones or 10+4=14. The students are excited to use their addition skills with teen numbers!

SCIENCE
We are comparing real pigs and pretend pigs this week using the story "Pigsty". Here is the story link so you can enjoy it at home. It's a fun story and a great way to illustrate ways pretend pigs are very different from real ones. At the end of the week we will look at sea creatures and how pretend and real creatures are very different too!

We are continuing our Module on Earth. :) Our stories are: Composting,   Pollution,   Air Pollution   and   Willy the Water Drop. The students are doing great at remembering what  the 3R's  are (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle) and using the vocabulary we have learned to discuss the Earth.

Decorating T-Shirts for International Day

**This activity is not mandatory, but it is TONS OF FUN!**

To get the students excited for International Day. We will be drawing/ painting West African symbols on t-shirts. (We have pictured a few of the favorites here.) To see all the symbols, go to this link
When the students bring a t-shirt to school, they will be asked what symbol they want and it will be drawn on their shirt by the teachers. During Recess time the students will have the opportunity to paint their symbol. ~We get asked about t-shirt colors... any color! The symbols will be painted with black paint, so all t-shirt colors will look great!~

***T-shirts need to be sent in by May 10.***
We will hang the t-shirts in the closet at school and save them for International Day on May 20th. :)

Our Resources for the week are Monday #1-18 P.E. and #19-37 ART, Tuesday is Boot Camp Play Day!! (Make sure to wear your Play Day shirts or a red shirt. Kindergarten's color is red!), Wednesday MUSIC and #1-18 Computer Lab and #19-37 P.E. Friday is HAT DAY. :) And Sydney is bringing in Fun Friday Snacks for the class.

HANDWRITING/ WRITING
We are completing handwriting by writing our weekly sight words, writing words for the word families and then writing CVC or CVCe words.
We are continuing our Memory Books. :)

MATH
As we approach the end of the school year the students are challenged to write numbers through 100, which bridges Kindergarten content of writing numbers to 20 (K.CC.1.3) to Grade 1 content of writing numbers to 120. We practice this skill regularly using the hundreds chart in the classroom. Now we will take our number writing skills and see how these numbers work with tens and ones. We will be counting up and down by tens and ones as we build numbers with ten frames. We are continuing to practice our addition and subtraction fluency. If you don't have flash cards at home this would be a good time to pick up a set as the long, hot summer days are approaching!!

SCIENCE
We end the year with studying the organizational and development of living organisms. The students will be able to tell how real animals and plants are different from fictional ones. This is a fun unit of study for the class as we dispel misconceptions students have about real vs fictional living organisms.

                                                                         READING

Our Sight Words for the week are much, right, any and want. Our Word Families are: -ate and -ame. Our blend is gl, here is the slideshow we will be using. (The last slide glitters! Our newest member of the 6-year- old club is Jacob on the 26th and then Ms. Finocchiaro has a birthday on the 30th.

HANDWRITING/ WRITING
We are completing handwriting by writing our weekly sight words, writing words for the word families and then writing CVC or CVCe words.
... : Kindergarten Graduation Diplomas and Kindergarten Memory Book
We are taking a break from persuasive writing to work on our Kindergarten Memory Books. We will complete one page daily. Once we have completed every page of the book, the students will go back to fix/ add/ color anything that needs their attention. :)

MATH
The class is picking up counting by 5s quickly! They are really getting quick at their math facts too! KG students are only suppose to focus on math facts through 5 but we are adding up to 10 as they do so well through 5. This week we continue to work with the teen numbers and counting on from 10. For example, if they see a bundle of 10 objects and 4 extra ones  they will count: 10, 11, 12, 13, 14. This is a difficult concept but as soon as they master this skill they become more effective counters and this will equip them for 1st grade math!

Social Studies/ International Magnet Program
This week we will focus on our magnet emphasis and learn more about Africa. Wednesday and Thursday will be extra fun as we do some special crafts related to Eqypt and the continent of Africa.

READING

Our Sight Words for the week are our, say, where and through. Our Word Families are: -ay and -ake. Our blend is fr. Here is the slideshow we will be using. Our Medial Vowel sound is U. We will discuss whether it's a short u or long u sound using this slideshow. We will also continue to practice making more opposite matches. Then end by writing CVC and CVCe words. The class is getting really good at remembering the vowel rules we have learned and writing these words.

We are reading our last story in the Colonial Times Module. The story is one of our favorites!! There are many different versions, so make sure to click on the title and read this one with your child. :) The story is Stone Soup. On Wednesday we will be taking our Reading Test. Please review the different trades from each story and discuss the materials/ tools that each trade used.
