Week of September 28

Can't find the perfect clip-art?

Our Resources for the week are: Monday #1-18 MEDIA & #19-36 ART, Tuesday #1-18 P.E.& #19-36 in the classroom, Wednesday  #1-18 MEDIA & #19-36 P.E., and Thursday ART. The last day to submit an order for the school Fundraiser is September 28. Friday is Patriotic Day!! Graham will be bringing Fun Friday Snack.

Handwriting/Writing
The letter formations we are working on are: Dd, Ww and Ee.
We will be focusing on using our letter sounds this week and SLOWLY writing. We do not expect students to write correctly at this time, but our goal is for them to hear letter sounds and associate it with a letter to write on their paper.   Students will also be working with a listening partner this week to discuss what is going on in their picture. The listening partner will decide whether or not the words they hear match the picture and what the writer needs to do next. Next steps could include: add more details to your setting, fix ____ on your characters body, add that person so that the story matches your picture, etc.
Here is a letter song that will get your child to act out the letter sounds and connect them with a motion/ picture word. :)

Math
We are moving into exploring numbers 8-10. A concept we are practicing repeatedly is "one more." As we are exploring counting larger groups the students tend to "guess" how many are in a set. We are taking time to always count!! We read a fun story today, "Pete the Cat 5 Little Pumpkins" We are ready for fall!! Here's a link to enjoy it at home!
Science
This week we finish exploring the sense of taste. Everyone enjoys this sense because we all love to eat! We will use vocabulary to describe foods as sweet, salty, sour and bitter and complete a journal page.

Reading
Sight words for the week are: me, no, three & four. (I am skipping one and two and will have them next week. ) We will review the five senses and focus on retelling what we learned about sight. Then we will listen to a story about Helen Keller and how she faced her disability and overcame it!
We will be taking a Module Assessment this week on the five senses. We can't wait for the students to show us what they've learned!
Watch this video and listen as it reviews the iris and pupil. Please know it goes more in depth than your child needs to know at this time... but it was the best video I could find. :)
Below that you will find a video about Helen Keller.

Week of September 21

 cute-sun-with-sunglasses-clipart-yTkg5reGc.jpeg
Our Resources for the week are: Monday #1-18 ART & #19-36 MUSIC, Tuesday #1-18 P.E.& #19-36 in the classroom, Wednesday ART, and Friday MUSIC. Tuesday September 22 is the last day to submit a T-shirt order. If you lost the order form, no worries! You can find a link to print one off of the blog. :) Wednesday is an EARLY RELEASE DAY! Friday is Sunglasses Day!! Please send them to school in your child's backpack, we will wear them outside during Recess. :) Zavion will be bringing Fun Friday Snacks and Caydein will be joining the 6-year-old Club!

Handwriting/Writing
We have noticed many of you are practicing writing your names at home. We are seeing appropriate letters: Uppercase first and the remaining letters lowercase. :) The letter formations we are working on are: Jj, Uu and Ll.
We will be reviewing setting up our writing paper with our name and the date (ex. 9-20-15). Then focusing on our pictures telling a story and our words matching the picture. We will work on a class piece for the playground. We will discuss all the different things we see in the setting: slides, swings, tunnels, grass, sidewalks, etc. We will discuss the different things the characters are doing: boy running, girl sliding down the slide, boys bouncing the balls, etc. Then we will write a story that matches the picture. :)  Here is a fun sound video we watched in class last week. It really gets the students to sing along and make their letter sounds.

Math
We are moving into exploring numbers 6-10. A concept we are practicing repeatedly is "one more." For example: if there are 5 apples, how many are there if we add one more? Also, ordering numbers is becoming daily practice for us. Making it more advanced by ordering backwards and presenting missing numbers in an order is really challenging our Kindergartners thinking. We play a game called "Beep." I count, "5, 6, BEEP!, 8." The students have to figure out the beep number. :) They love it!! Give it a try at home.

Science
As we finish exploring hearing this week, we will enjoy listening and watching an Eric Carle story, Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear? Below is the video for you to enjoy at home. :)
Later in the week we will explore the sense of taste. Everyone enjoys this sense because we all love to eat!We will use vocabulary to describe foods as sweet, salty, sour and bitter. Give it a try at home! Can your identify how foods you are eating for dinner taste. :)

Reading
Sight words for the week are: purple, pink, and & to. We will focus on the senses for smell, taste and touch. We will discuss  retelling key details about each topic. Ex Our taste buds allow us to figure out if our food is salty, sweet or bitter. Our nerves carry messages to our brain and allow us to figure out what we are touching. We will be completing a few journal entries: one about foods that make our mouths pucker :) and another about different textures. On Friday we will listen to a story about the remarkable musician Ray Charles. We will learn how his blindness may be his disability, but his ears are his opportunity! :) Here is a fun Sesame Street video of Ray Charles singing with Bert and Ernie.

Our Resources for the week are: Monday=1-18 MUSIC & 19-37 have P.E., Tuesday=ART, Thursday=MUSIC and Friday= 1-18 P.E.& 19-37 are in the classroom.
Friday is Superhero T-shirt Day. :)  (Wear clothes to show everyone who your favorite Superhero is!!) Sydney is bringing Fun Friday Snacks and Gabriel is joining the 6-year-old Club!
Also, all Scholastic Book Orders need to be submitted online or sent to school in your child's blue folder by Friday, September 18. We will be submitting the order after school that day.

**As the students use I-ready for blended learning,  follow-up at home is great. If you allow your child to use I-ready at home please do not help them with the lesson. Watch and look for weaknesses and strengths as they use the program. Also, we are teaching students to use their username and password. Let them practice logging in at home. They will pick it up quickly!**

Handwriting/Writing:
We will continue to practice letter formations for our first and last names. (This quarter your child receives a grade for writing their first name with an uppercase letter and the rest lowercase.)  Along with letters Oo, Gg and Hh. We will continue discussing Kindergarten Writing- drawing detailed people, adding a setting to our pictures and coloring, NOT scribbling. Discuss the different things your child can write about and practice telling a story about their picture. Ex. "My dad and I went fishing in a boat and he caught a big fish. It was the best day ever!"
vector illustration of a father and a son going fishing on a boat.

The students have enjoyed watching Jack Hartmann's letter sounds video. Get ready to listen to your child sing away! :)

Math:
Writing numbers correctly is important! This week we are focused on writing numbers 0-5, making groups and composing and decomposing these numbers. Here is a number rhyme video that’s fun to use!

Science:
We love Mr. R’s Sing Along Songs in Kindergarten! Here is a fun one about the 5 senses. This week we will explore the sense of touch and the sense of hearing.

Reading:
Sight Words for the week are: black, white, can, like. We will be reviewing Concepts About Print- identifying front cover, back cover, spine, etc.  Reading will be following along with Science for a bit... :) We will have an overview of the Five Senses and then we will discuss the sense of Sight and Hearing in detail. We will also be making entries in our Reading Journals about things that we can see/hear/feel around us in the classroom, along with things we hear that are loud and soft. :) Read the poem "My Senses Are Amazing" to your child and then discuss the things that each sense does.
We will be watching these video's by Mr.R in class. Watch them and enjoy, you'll find yourself singing with your child. :)

Character T-shirt Day

Friday was totally FUN during Recess. :)
The students loved eating the popsicles and discussing what flavor they had. (They were super excited when their flavor matched mine or Mrs. Pitts.) Our Busy Bee's!!

Our students have been busing "BEE-ing" champs the past few weeks. :) So we wanted to do something FUN! We had Mrs. Pitts Mom, Ms. Lori, come in and complete a bumblebee craft with the students. (They all fell in love with her.:) She is the sweetest woman!!)Once the crafts were all done, the students drew a picture showing one way they could "Bee" a champ at school.

We hung the bees up for Open House, but we wanted to make them even cuter... so we had all the students put on bumblebee antennae and we snapped some pictures!

Enjoy the slideshow!!
