Week of October 12

Here is the door decoration we made for the Superintendent's All Star Literacy Week.

Our Resources for the week are: Monday #1-18 MUSIC & #19-36 P.E., Tuesday #1-18 in the classroom & #19-36 P.E, Wednesday MUSIC, and Friday #1-18 MEDIA & #19-36 P.E. This week is Superintendent's All Star Literacy Week, make sure to check out the blog post with the information so that you don't miss out on any of the fun activities. Friday is Stuffed Animal Day!! (Please send the stuffed animal to school in your child's backpack. We will take them outside during Recess time.) Friday is also Character Dress Up Day!! **We will have a short Parade (approx.15 minutes) at 9:00a.m. Only students dressed in their character attire and have their book will be allowed to walk in the Parade. Other students will watch. Also, please send a set of clothes for your child to change into so that they can change out of their character attire if they choose to. Scholastic Book Orders are also due Friday! You may send your order online or send the order form with money to school. Orlando will be bringing in Fun Friday Snacks.

Handwriting/Writing
The letter formations we are working on are: Xx, Yy, and Zz. We will be working on completing a writing piece in class and sharing it with our peers. The students will be expected to tell about their story and explain why it is the best work they have done thus far.
At home, make sure your child is drawing detailed people with a complete setting. When they add color remind them that they need to take their time so that scribbling doesn't happen. Finally when they go to write; remind them they know a lot of sight words and they can use them in their writing! Not to mention they know letter sounds and can sound out their words. :)

Math
One more, One Less. Students use their understanding of relationships between numbers to recognize that each successive number name refers to a quantity that is one greater and that the number before is one less. This important insight leads students to use the Level 2 strategy of counting on rather than counting all, later in the year and on into Grade 1.

Reading
Sight words for the week are: go, day, on and said. Continue practicing reading Sight Words with the Sight Word Money at home. If you need additional copies of the words, you can find links to print them out by looking on the left side column of the blog.
We will be reading folktales and continuing to retell them, however we will work on retelling the story by using the character's names and setting when appropriate. Also, we will discuss the plot of each story~ what is the story mostly about, what is its plot? The folktales we will be reading are Momotaro, Peach Boy , The Story of Jumping Mouse Part 1 and Part 2 ,  and Goldilocks and the Three Bears.
I typed up each of the stories again.:) You can access them by clicking on the title of the folktale. After you read it to your child, ask them about the plot and then have them retell the story to you. Make sure their events start at the beginning, then move on through the middle and go to the end.
