Week of October 26

 Picture Day is this week!
 Full Classroom: Red Ribbon Week
We have a busy week!! :)
Our Resources for the week are: Monday #1-18 P.E. & #19-36 ART, Tuesday #1-18 P.E. & #19-36 in is the classroom, Wednesday ART, and Thursday #1-18 is in the classroom & #19-36 MEDIA. There is no school on Friday, it is a Teacher Planning Day. :)
Don't forget Red Ribbon Week activities are going on. :) Monday- wear red!, Tuesday- wear silly socks!, and Thursday- show your team spirit!! Hat Day was cancelled on Wednesday due to School Pictures going on.

Handwriting/Writing
We will continue to review letter formations, along with number formations during Handwriting. I plan on going through the letters in order and incorporating Word Family Handwriting as needed.
With Writing we will continue to work hard at drawing a detailed setting and then writing a story to match. We have noticed some AMAZING WRITING happening in our room!! The students are doing a great job using the Word Wall (we have all the sight words introduced thus far in class on there) and using their beginning sounds for words. :)
Example= I like to r bs. The translation is "I like to read books."
A few students are stretching words out and writing multiple sounds for words, but we are not pushing it at the current time. Below is a video to keep your child excited about reading. :)

Math
It's all about shapes! We are switching gears and learning about flat and solid shapes. This weeks activities will include learning to describe shapes, sorting shapes and drawing and building various shapes. Here is a shape video your kids will love!
 Science
This is one of my favorite weeks in Science. We are taking a brief break from learning about tools scientists use and we are learning about PUMPKINS!! We will observe pumpkins inside and out. We will try pumpkin seeds and make a fun pumpkin project. It's always fun to tie in seasonal celebrations with science!

Reading
Sight words for the week are: be, make, have and in.
We will be reading about plants for the next few weeks. We will discuss how plants are living things and that all living things need food, water and air. We will also discuss how they reproduce and make living things that look like themselves. This week we will have a lot of new vocabulary being introduced! (Science has really pushed into this unit!! :) We love Science!!) We will discuss ways to figure out the meanings of these unknown words and how we can use them in sentences of our own.
Here are a few main words we will focus on:
1) soil- the part of the ground where plants are planted and grow.
2) life cycle-  the stages and changes that happen in living things.
3) survival- the act of staying alive.
4) germinate- to sprout from a seed and begin growing into a new plant.
5) sapling- a young tree.
6) photosynthesis- the process the leaf uses where they use the light to turn the water and air already in the plant into food for the rest of the plant.
We will be completing daily Graphic Organizers for figuring out the meanings of unknown words. This Graphic Organizer is taken from the book Duval Reads. Here is a link to the page in case you want to practice completing it at home with your own child. :)
Below is a video of the Life Cycle of a Plant. Enjoy!
