Week of October 19

Fall Clipart | Clipart Panda - Free Clipart Images
Our Resources for the week are: Monday #1-18 ART & #19-36 MUSIC, Tuesday ART, and Thursday MUSIC. Wednesday is an Early Release Day and Friday is Fall T-shirt Day. Juelz will be bringing in Fun Friday Snacks. :)

Handwriting/Writing
We will be reviewing letter formations for Uppercase and Lowercase. If you notice you child is having difficulty with any of the letters ~writing them backwards, not completing the circle of the letter~ please have your child practice writing them correctly.  We will begin word families next week and I want the students to be prepared with their b's and d's, n's and h's and also their s's and z's. :)
At home, make sure your child is drawing detailed people with a complete setting. Also, please remind them that we draw with pencil at school, so that if they make a mistake they can fix it and not become frustrated. We have noticed a great improvement with detailed people!! Hope the great work continues. :)
Here are a few detailed people drawn by the students for you to enjoy!

Math
The students are progressing well with the concept of one more and are catching on quickly to one less. Our work with "one less" continues this week. The foundations of subtraction are being set as we explore "taking away" from a set.  As the end of the week approaches the students will have a little Jack-o-lantern fun using their math skills. Also, the Fall theme will be incorporated into many of our math centers. Be working on counting onto 50 now. The problem areas seem to be 39,40 then again 49,50. If your child already counts to 100 practice counting passed 100!

 Science
Our little scientists begin the week asking questions like a scientist about the world around them. As the week progresses we use questions to help us investigate the world. We will complete a Water Absorption investigation and explore weighing and comparing objects using a balance. Here is a fun episode on science tools from Sid the Science Kid I'm sure YOUR science kid will enjoy!

Reading
Sight words for the week are: get, up, my and so.
We will be reading one more folktale and then begin reviewing the standards for our Test. The standards we have been working on through this Module are: Identifying characters, setting and major events in a story. Retelling stories with key details and using Character names when appropriate. Identify beginning, middle and ending events in proper sequenceAsking and answering questions about the stories.  The folktale we will be reading this week is Tug-of-War. (Click the title so that you can enjoy the story with your child.) We will play a fun game where two people will look at a picture and describe what is going on in the picture so that the rest of the class can guess the title of the story. The students are not allowed to see the picture until after they guess the story title correctly. :)
We will end Stories by making a fun Chicken picture to practice our retelling of Chicken Little. (You can find the story on the blog post done a few weeks ago.) Be prepared for a lot of "The sky is falling!" talk. haha The students really enjoyed saying the line!.

Here are a few photos we will use in our game. Try it out with your child at home!
(I apologize for the first two photos being on their side, blogger would not allow me to rotate them... very strange!)
