FSA Buddy Announcement #2

Testing day #2...
We wanted to make our Buddies smile, so we made them a pretty "CHEESE" poster!
Then we added cheez-its as the special treat.

ooh while I was over there taking the pictures, I took pictures of the Class Letters we wrote for Mrs. Griffin and Mrs. Burgett.

And... our Buddies surprised us with another treat. :) They thanked us for helping make them "Smart Cookies!!" Everyone received their own special bag.

Here is 30 of the sweetest treats ever. :) Thanks Mrs. Griffin and Mrs. Burgett. And thanks FSA Buddies for being the best!!!
Here are a few pictures of the class enjoying them during recess.

The FSA Test began today for our 3rd grade FSA Buddies. :)

The 3rd graders were a little nervous this morning, but all were super excited because they entered their classroom with the cutest Classroom Doors and they had letters written by their penpals. :)

Week of March 29

Pep Rally Clip Art - Cliparts.co
**Make sure to check back for pictures of our FSA goodies and messages of encouragement!**

Our Resources for the week are: Tuesday MUSIC. Due to FSA Testing, we will not have any Resources the rest of the week. Wednesday is an Early Release Day and Friday is School Color Day. :) We hope to see lots of blue and yellow!!
Please email us if you would like to sign up for any Fun Friday Snack Dates.

Handwriting/Writing
We will review the format for writing a letter and discuss who we can write letters to. Then the students will pick one person off of our Letter Writing Chart and they will write a letter to graded. Please review the letter writing format with your child so that they receive the best grade possible.

MATH
Upon our return to school we will dive further into subtraction. Transitioning between addition and subtraction can cause confusion for even the strongest mathematician. The concept of taking away from a whole group to make 2 parts is strongly emphasized. As the class is working on subtraction, we will continue to work on our addition fluency. Mr. R never lets us down with cute videos for teaching concepts we are learning. Here is a fun one for subtraction!

SCIENCE

Before spring break we looked at the day sky and recorded our observations. This week we focus on the night sky including the moon, stars and planets. Stars and planets are always a favorite topic for our young scientists to explore. Check out websites from NASA if you are looking for some interesting topics to discuss at home. NASA offers great educational videos to share with the family! This week the homework packet will include a moon observation chart to complete over the next 2 weeks. Hopefully the weather will cooperate! Enjoy observing the evening sky with your scientist!

Library Visit :)

We had another Library Lesson with Mrs. Noah Thomas. :)
She had her mystery letters for us to figure out Spring Words. The words were butterfly and caterpillar. :)
She read the class two books; Buzz, Buzz, Buzz went Bumblebee and The Crunching Munching Caterpillar.  The class enjoyed the books and were making sounds throughout both. :) Then the class played butterfly hands and danced through a song. Plus they played a head, shoulders, knees and toes game where they rested a pom pom on their body. Finally we ended the lesson by making insects. The girls made butterflies and the boys made caterpillars. We didn't get to take individual pictures because the students used a TON of glue and the insects were very wet...

FSA Buddies

Test-clip-art-3 | Best Clip Art Blog
Every year we are assigned an FSA Buddy (previously known as FCAT Buddies) and we cheer them on by making posters, giving them snacks and TONS & TONS & encouragement for three full days.

We sent home envelopes yesterday asking for donations and we even received a few today. Woohoo!!  We wanted to say THANK YOU  to those parents and students, along with the future donators, for helping us cheer on our 3rd grade buddies from Mrs. Griffin and Mrs. Burgett's classes.

We will post pictures of the things we make and the treats we give. :) Check back here for the updates!
ooh Sneak peak of some of our ideas... they are from Pinterest. (We LOVE Pinterest!!)
Treats & Sayings to Motivate Test Takers. A perfect way to break the ice for those with test anxiety!! I was one of those and something to nibble on always helped!:   Use a donut and a witty saying to pump kids up for state testing.:   Scholarship Chairs could make these and pass out during chapter meeting around finals time!:   Fun EOG snack. Great job @marileeallen!!:

Dental Health Presentation

Linguistics Research Digest: Clean teef or clean teeth?
Our presentation was great and our presenter, Ms. Maggi was fantastic!! She is from the dentist office of Dr. Beth Kailes and Dr.Nicole Staman. They are located in Fleming Island and you can check out their amazing website by clicking HERE.

The students wanted to share every fact they knew about teeth... most were true, some were a little silly. :) Ms. Maggi informed the students how to clean their teeth, she showed them the parts of a tooth, went over good foods and bad foods (of course the kids thought she asked about yummy and yucky foods haha) and then we were able to have a future dentist in our room. CARLIE!! She was able to experience the items that a doctor/ hygenist wears when we see them in an office in the dentist office.

Here is a video of what you can expect when your child has their first visit at their dentist office.

Here are the pictures we took during Ms. Maggi's visit. Enjoy!

Handwriting/Writing
We are moving away from Opinion Writing and into Letter Writing! We are beginning by discussing the letters from the story Click Clack Moo Cows That Type and figuring out our own letters we would write to the characters.
We will be discussing questions words: Who, What, Where, When, Why and How.
Check out the youtube video of the book and practice coming up with questions for the characters with your child.

Math

This week and next week we will be using sums of 9 and 10 to compose and decompose. Learning combinations of ten is an important building block for addition and subtraction for years to come. Knowing that 1 and 9, 2 and 8 etc make 10 will bolster your child's fluency in math especially in 2nd and 3rd grade! I have been very proud of how well the class is applying their skills to adding and subtracting. I know the extra effort at home completing homework is paying off!

Science
Space, the final frontier. I always enjoy teaching concepts of relating to space. The students get very excited about all things having to do with the sky, stars and planets. This week we will observe the day and night sky. Take time on clear evenings to check out the moon and the stars. I love hearing the students tell me their night sky observations!

Reading
Sight words for the week are: would, him, did and over. Our two Word Families are the -un and -ut family. Practice having your child make words that would belong in the families~ bun, shut, fun, hut, etc. Along with the CH- blend. Practice having your child think of words that would begin with the ch blend: chicken, chips, chapstick, etc.   Here is a slideshow I made for us to use in class. We will also be discussing words that have the long a sound thanks to "Magic/Super/Silent E!!"
We are beginning a new Module titled Columbus and the Pilgrims. This week we will discuss Christopher Columbus and the plans he has for finding new land. We will discuss how he has the financial support of Ferdinand and Isabella, but not much from the other people. Here are links to the stories we will be reading: The Spice Seekers, Ferdinand and Isabella, 1492 and Not the Indies.
